Valentine's Party for Singles

Who says Valentine's Day is just for lovers? While couples stress about how to make cupid's annual holiday live up to its romantic hype, you can throw a fabulous fete for the other half of the population—the single crowd. It's a perfect opportunity to celebrate friendship, keep lovelorn spirits up, and embark on fresh flirtations. Invite a bunch of singles, ask them to bring their favorite unattached friend of the opposite sex, add the following party particulars, and who knows what will happen. After all, Cupid's arrow usually strikes when you least expect it. —Erika Lenkert

THE LOVE POTION: Get those romantic juices flowing with the beguiling Heartbreaker cocktail. Set up a self-service bar stocked with chilled sparkling rosé wine, a chilled bottle of Bacardi Razz, and skewers of raspberries and heart-shaped strawberry slices. Add a card instructing guests to pour one shot of rum into a champagne flute, fill it with bubbly, add a skewer, and let the party begin! SET THE MOOD: Play it up with tight bouquets of black or red roses. Scatter mini candy hearts across the buffet table, add a few bowls of Hershey's Kisses, and go overboard on candlelight. Play a mix of classic heartbreak and breakup songs, from Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker" to Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walking." HOLD A CONTEST: Ask guests to share their worst date story. Get everyone to vote on the best of the worst and award the winner the grand prize of a little black book. GO TRAY CHIC: As the evening winds down, present guests with a tray of iced heart-shaped cookies and a few edible-ink pens. Encourage guests to write cute Valentine's sentiments to one another, and let them know that if Cupid has struck, these cookies are the perfect way to sweetly slip someone a phone number for future reference.
